Plank grilling is a method where food is placed on a wooden board over a grill.
The wood doesn’t catch on fire, because it is soaked beforehand in water.
That being said, you need to keep an eye on your wood in case there are any flare-ups.

Along with cedar, you can get; cherry, hickory, alder, maple, and many others.
Cedar is the most popular choice of the wood plank.
How to Soak Your Plank Before Smoking
Soaking planks is one of the most important steps for cedar plank burgers. It helps slow down the burning of the plank.
You can also soak the planks in other liquids like wine, beer, or juice if you want more flavor.
How to Toast Your Plank Before Smoking
Toasting the planks makes sure the planks are ready for grilling.
Be sure to toast the planks on both sides.
When you hear popping and see smoking, your planks are ready for the burgers.

What sort of grill should you use?

They’re easy to use, can maintain a consistent temperature, and are perfect for intensifying flavors.

How To Make Cedar Plank Burgers
There are plenty of great recipes out there for grilling food on a cedar plank.
Today, we’re going to be looking at cedar plank burgers.
How Long to Soak Your Cedar Plank
Step 1: Get a bowl of water or other liquid such as beer, wine, or whiskey. Soak your cedar grilling planks for at least 2 hours.
Step 2: Place the planks on medium heat and toast for 2-3 minutes.
Step 3: Divide your mince into equal portions and form a 3/4 inch- thick burger. If your using frozen patties, see how to stop burgers from shrinking here.
Using your thumb, make an impression in the center of each burger. Brush each burger with oil and seasonings.
Step 4: Place the burgers (one per cedar plank) and cook for 3 minutes. Flip the burgers until they are cooked on both sides.During the last minute add your buns to the grill to toast.
Step 5 (optional): Melt slices of cheese onto each burger.
Step 6: Remove the burgers from the grill. Add buns, toppings, sauce, and serve!

Maybe, it depends on the condition of the plank.
If the plank is thoroughly charred you will need a fresh one.
But, if it’s still in good condition, wash the plank and use it again next time!

Equipment
- 1 cedar plank
- 1 Grill
Ingredients
- 4 whole burger patties
- 2 slices cheese
- 1 tbsp olive oill
- 4 whole burger buns
- 1 tbsp kosher salt or seasoning of choice (ancho chili pepper, lemon zest, fresh basil etc)
- 3 tbsp mayonnaise or sauce of choice (red wine vinegar, bbq sauce, tartar sauce etc)
- 1 cup mushroom or toppings of choice (tomatoes, shallots, onions etc),
Instructions
- Get a bowl of water or other liquid. Soak your cedar grilling planks for at least 2 hours.
- Place the planks on medium heat and toast for 2-3 minutes.
- Using your thumb, make an impression in the center of each burger.
- Place the burgers (two per cedar plank) and cook for 3 minutes.
- Flip the burgers until they are cooked on both sides.
- Melt slices of cheese onto each burger. Add bun to the grill to toast
- Remove the burgers from the grill. Add buns, toppings, sauce, and serve!
