Ingredients
  

  • 4 slices bread
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • 2 oz sharp cheddar cheese sliced or grated
  • 2 oz Gruyère cheese sliced or grated
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard optional
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • Pinch of flaky sea salt

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 425°F with a rimmed baking sheet inside on the middle rack.
  • Spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice, then lightly dust with garlic powder and a pinch of flaky salt.
  • Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the unbuttered side of two slices, if using.
  • Layer the cheddar and Gruyère evenly across the mustard-side slices, covering edge to edge.
  • Top with the remaining bread, buttered side facing out.
  • Carefully remove the hot baking sheet and place the sandwiches directly on it.
  • Bake 5 minutes, flip carefully, then bake another 4–5 minutes until deep golden and cheese is fully melted.
