unsalted butter
softened

sharp cheddar cheese
sliced or grated

Gruyère cheese
sliced or grated

Dijon mustard
optional

garlic powder
Pinch
of flaky sea salt
Instructions
Preheat oven to 425°F with a rimmed baking sheet inside on the middle rack.
Spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice, then lightly dust with garlic powder and a pinch of flaky salt.
Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the unbuttered side of two slices, if using.
Layer the cheddar and Gruyère evenly across the mustard-side slices, covering edge to edge.
Top with the remaining bread, buttered side facing out.
Carefully remove the hot baking sheet and place the sandwiches directly on it.
Bake 5 minutes, flip carefully, then bake another 4–5 minutes until deep golden and cheese is fully melted.
