How to Bake Sweet Potatoes

Prep The Sweet Potatoes

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). This temperature is ideal for baking sweet potatoes, ensuring they cook evenly and develop a slightly crispy exterior.

Scrub the sweet potatoes well under running water to remove dirt or debris. Pat them dry with a paper towel.

Pierce the sweet potatoes with a fork or sharp knife in several places. This will help steam escape during baking, preventing the potatoes from bursting.

Cook

Place the prepared sweet potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Baking the sweet potatoes directly on the rack can help to develop a crispier skin, while using a baking sheet can make cleanup easier.

Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until tender when pierced with a fork. The skin should also be slightly wrinkled and the sweet potato should yield to gentle pressure.

Cool and Serve

Let the sweet potatoes cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them plain or with your favorite toppings.

How Long to Bake

Bake the sweet potatoes for 45-60 minutes, or until you can easily insert a fork. At this point, the skin will be slightly wrinkled.

Toppings and Stuffing Suggestions

Baked sweet potatoes are a blank canvas for endless topping possibilities. Here are some great options to try:

Sweet: Butter, cinnamon, brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, or marshmallows
Savory: Chili, pulled pork, crispy bacon, cheddar, goat, or blue cheese, avocado, sour cream, Greek yogurt, salsa, guacamole, or roasted veggies
Hearty: Black beans, chickpeas, lentils, or quinoa
Spicy: Sriracha or your favorite hot sauce
Fresh: Cilantro, parsley, green onions, or chopped nuts like walnuts and pecans

Mix and match to discover your perfect flavor combination!

How to Store and Reheat

To store cooked sweet potatoes, place them in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days. For longer storage, wrap individual sweet potatoes in foil and store in a freezer-safe container or bag. Frozen sweet potatoes can be stored for up to 6 months.

To reheat, microwave the sweet potato for 1-2 minutes or until heated. If reheating from frozen, thaw the sweet potato overnight in the refrigerator before microwaving. For a crispier exterior, you can reheat the sweet potato in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes.
