I agree, grill covers are not the most interesting topic in the world. However, they are important. Well in my eyes they are anyway. I was always taught to look after my things and my things will look after me.
I am a big believer in this when in comes to something as important as my grills. Even a cheap grill really isn’t that cheap, so I want to look after my investment (thats right I just called my grill an investment). How can a grill stay in good condition and continue to produce great food if its condition is deteriorating because of the outdoor elements?
It can’t can it?
Now, if you are lucky you will get a free grill cover with your grill – Perfect! However sometimes the freebies are not quite up to par and end up just being more of a thin piece of crap that doesn’t really do anything, or stay on the grill if it gets windy.
In this post we are going to look at the best grill covers for the most popular grill types on the market today. We are also going to look at what the best grill covers are made out of and what you need to look out for when buying yourself a grill cover – just incase your style of grill is not covered here.
What to Look For When Looking For The Best Grill Cover
One size does not fit all! Here is what you need to keep in mind when finding the best grill cover for your specific grill.
Size and fit
Size doesn’t always matter, but it does when it comes to the best grill cover for your specific grill!
No two grills are made exactly the same – so you really do need a grill cover that has been designed to fit your grill. This will ensure that your grill is well covered in all weather conditions and seasons.
There is no point buying a great grill cover if it is not going to fit your grill correctly and cover the entire thing.
You need to make sure that the grill is well covered, without any gaps or holes where wind can get in and cause a blowout, or moisture can get in and cause the grill to start rusting prematurely.
Fastenings and ties
There is no point having a grill cover if you can’t fasten it down well. There are a couple of reasons why having a secure grill cover:
- You run the risk of the wind getting under and blowing it off, possibly ripping the cover or in worst case knocking over the grill.
- Foreign objects like leaves, dust, dirt, moisture or snow can get in and start causing havoc on the wood and metal.
When looking at fastenings ideally you want to be looking for heavy duty buttons, ties, zips or ropes.
With anything warranty is important. Any brand that makes a decent product should stand behind it with a decent warranty period.
I like to use the general rule of think (when buying anything not just grill covers) if the company doesn’t have a decent warranty – they obviously don’t have much faith in their product!
Construction and construction material
What your grill cover is made out of is just as important as the size. There is no point in having a grill cover that is made out of thin, flimsy material. This will protect your grill from next to nothing.
Essentially you want a good sturdy grill cover for two main reasons
- To give your grill the best protection from the elements and other objects when in storage.
- So you don’t rip it when taking it on and off (particularly when you are putting it back on after your cookout when you might have had a couple of beers).
Ideally you want a cover that is made from canvas, vinyl or a thick polyester. Basically the thicker the better here.
Another thing to keep in mind is the seams and stitching. You want a cover that has touch stitching that will handle years of taking on and off, folding and getting thrown around the backyard. If it doesn’t have heavy duty stitching – its a no deal!
When I say protection I am talking about 3 main factors:
- Padding: For me its essential that my grill cover has padding. You need to think about where you are storing your grill when it is not in use. If you are like me and store it away in the garage under shelving and there is risk of things falling onto it – the best grill cover will have padding! This will stop any major damages if something like a full paint tin or power tool was to fall on it.
- UV protection: Again think about where you are going to be storing your grill. If you are storing it outside it is going to be a good idea to have some sort of UV protection. This will stop your paintwork from deteriorating over time and exposing the metal. If you have exposed metal that is when you can start to get rust and all sorts of issues.
- Waterproofing: If you are storing your grill outside the best grill cover for you is going to have to be waterproof. You don’t want your grill to be sitting outside all winter with moisture creeping in and causing havoc on your unit. If moisture gets in under the cover you are going to uncover your grill to rust.
Style and look
This is more of a personal preference thing. Personally I don’t care too much about the look of my grill cover. Its all about whats under the cover!
However, if you are all about having something that looks good, the best grill cover for you is going to be a grill cover that is ecstatically pleasing to you – and your guests.
Covers come in all different colours, materials, shapes, sizes and designs – choose one that matches you, your outdoor area and your grill if that is your thing!
